What to clean with is less important than removing all dust and spots such as fingerprints. **** and Span, it is a dry product that you mix with water and depending on the job, follow the directons on the box.
I would use a non foaming cleaner like Pine sol in water that won't leave soap residue but will remove any cooking oils, etc. from your walls..
First take a good soft brush and sweep every inch of them. Then to wash them, use TSP in water. Let them dry and they will come out great after painting.
Mr. Clean and Mr. Clean Magic erasers. Fantastic works well also.
