Any tips for washing painted walls?

without rubbing off the paint?Any tips for washing painted walls?
Great question! I washed my painted walls not too long along.. Try this!

    You Will Need:

    Ladder

    Vacuum cleaner with brush attachment

    Mild detergent

    Sponge

    Water

    Bucket

    Dry towel

    Plastic drop cloth

    The Cleaning Process:

    1. Begin by lining the floor with plastic where you鈥檒l be working to prevent damage from excess water or spills.

    2. Use your vacuum鈥檚 brush attachment to remove loose dirt and cobwebs. Do not push the brush onto the wall surface, as loose dirt may smudge and leave marks. Allow the vacuum鈥檚 suction to lift the dirt away from the wall.

    3. Start at the top of the wall. You鈥檒l want to clean from side to side and from the top to bottom in sections as you work around the room.

    4. Fill the bucket half to two thirds full of warm water.

    5. Add just enough detergent to create a few bubbles when the water is agitated. Adding too much soap will cause the walls to become sticky and attract more dirt.

    6. Dip the sponge in the water and squeeze out excess water.

    7. Wipe the wall down as explained in step three, stopping to wet and rinse the sponge frequently.

    8. Use the dry towel to wipe up excess moisture as you work.Any tips for washing painted walls?
Adding to Sean's answer - when washing start at the bottom to avoid soil tracks on the wall. Report Abuse

To clean walls, I use 1/2 cup ammonia, 1/4 cup white vinegar, and 1/4 cup washing soda (Arm %26amp; Hammer still makes this, though it is getting harder to find) to one gallon of warm water.

And yes, this can be used on flat paint.
if it's flat paint, (dull,no shine) you can't wash it. If it has a shine to it, wash it.

Best paint that will not come off if you wash the wall with soap and water?

Satin paint is durable and washable. they do sell paints that are intended for scrubbing such as Ben Moore Regal Matte, Duration Home Matte. don鈥檛 use flat that鈥檚 generally a ceiling paint and gloss shows every imperfection. Go to Lowe's or home depot and ask to look at scrubable-washable wall paints they will usually be called a lo-luster, satin, matt, aqua, these are all latex based paints.

Best paint that will not come off if you wash the wall with soap and water?
First, I'd stick with Ben Moore paints because I have found it to be the best. Flat might come off slightly when washing, but if you are inclined to use a Magic Eraser it will take the sheen off the walls of even an Egg Shell finish. So I'm sticking with a flat finish that can easily be touched up again with left over paint. Ben Moore is such a quality paint that you'd have to scrub it an awful lot before you'd see the paint diminish. Best paint that will not come off if you wash the wall with soap and water?
My experience with this is that flat paint comes off if you wash the wall, but any other sheen, like eggshell or satin, stays on the wall very well when you wash or scrub it. The higher the gloss, the easier it is to wash, but you get much shinier than satin, and it's kind of hard to apply.
Just about any interior semi gloss paint can be wiped down. I have used it in my bathroom which gets all steamed up, and it wipes down without any paint coming off.
I would think any name brand semi gloss wall paint. The more gloss the harder the paint surface, therefore the easy er to clean.
I am starting to use kwal liquid vinyl paints, both interior and exterior.I just completed a 3300 sq ft home exterior job,I liked the way it sprayed and layed down.So far I'm pleased.

How to wash crayon off glass window and a wall painted with a flat paint?

My daughter drew with crayon all over her window and the wall. How can I wash the crayon off both surfaces? How to wash crayon off glass window and a wall painted with a flat paint?
You can melt the wax off your window with a blow dryer. Wipe it off as it melts with a paper towel.

You could try a blow dryer on your walls, too. Blow dry the wax, then dap it off with a paper towel.

Or you could try a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on your walls. If you use the Magic Eraser, be very gentle. Matte paint is not durable.

If neither of these work on your walls, you'll have to use sand paper -- which means you'll have to paint the wall.

If you don't have the right color wall paint, I do know a trick. Match the current wall paint as close as possible. Then just paint the one wall from corner to corner. It will look like an exact match. How to wash crayon off glass window and a wall painted with a flat paint?
    1. Plain old regular toothpaste, not gel.

    2. Baking soda, sprinkle on a moist sponge and go for it.

Dry using Comet or a Soft Scrub for the washing basin it really works with lifting stains and rejuvinating the basin with shineness. I had cracked paint on the walls so i sanded them down to a very smooth finish, then washed down the walls, i?

then was told to seal the walls with a sealer, which i did. then sealer has lossened the paint behind it and dried so now the finish is really poor. what can i do now, please help as im very angry that this has happened.I had cracked paint on the walls so i sanded them down to a very smooth finish, then washed down the walls, i?
Unfortunately there is a lot of duff amateur advice around. I hope you didn't seal your walls with PVA.

Previously painted walls do not need sealing or priming unless they are friable, powdery, unstable. Otherwise you straight emulsion over them.

If you do prime/seal them because they need stabilising then Bullseye 1-2-3 is the stuff to use.

You need to sand you walls down until you hit a surface which is soundly attached to the walls. If you wash the walls down do it with clean water only - you are only removing the dust that could act as a barrier to your new emulsion.

The sealer you put on has loosened the paint underneath either because it was a strong sealer and bit into the paint or the paint underneath it was not soundly attached anyway. Either way, and it is hard for me to judge without seeing it, you can only paint on a soundly attached surface and you have to get back to that. If you have real problems with the surface and have many hours of sanding adhead, then buy or hire a palm sander. Dewalt or Makita are the best and you can get one for 拢60-80 and thereafter you can use it on all your woodwork etc.I had cracked paint on the walls so i sanded them down to a very smooth finish, then washed down the walls, i?
If the paint remains soundly attached you will not need to sand back to the walls. If it is unstable, then yes, you will have to sand back to stability or plaster. Be care not to scratch bare plaster with rough sandpaper and apply very thin emulsion as a first coat primer. Report Abuse

Did you allow the walls to dry for 24 hours before applying the sealer? If not, that's the issue; moisture trapped behind the sealer. Or is it possible that wall has a moisture issue that started the whole problem?

Unfortunately, there is little remedy but to sand the walls again. This time don't wash but just go over them with a damp cloth to get all the sanding dust off and let them dry for a day before moving on.

What product did you use the ';seal'; the walls? I use Zinser's Bull's Eye 123 which is a primer/sealer and have had no issues with it. It can be used outside, inside, with oil base or latex base paints.

Hang in there and you'll get the results you want!

Well it depends on the finish, is it paint then what type of paint. Wood paneling, marble, etc. I would google the type of material and it would tell you any special instructions. Another option is to test a cleaning material on a part of the wall that is hidden or behind a door, an easy way to see what it will do to it.HOW DO YOU WASH IN SIDE WALLS?

Dirty walls will make your house stink, more so if people smoke in the house. I use windex because it does not streak or leave a soap film. You will be susprised , to see how dirty the bucket water will be.

Depends on how large the walls are....in a standard sized apartment, i would say $5 per wall. How much to charge for washing down walls?
Charge by the hour and figure out how many hours it takes to do the job. I used to do this with apartment cleaning and it was necessary sometimes because of smokers. You basically had to mop the yellow gunk off the walls and ceiling before they could repaint. Since its unskilled labor, you can only get about $10/hr, if that. A small apartment would be about $50.

Also the moldings are painted I really wanted to remove the paint and have the wood underneath stained, but again I was discouraged. I was told that it would be way to much work and I would be there forever just trying to remove the paint off of one jamb. Is that true? Is it a bad idea to remove the paint and go with a natural wood look? If it's not that hard what would I use to do this?

Thanks in advance for the help. I am new to this and I really appreciate the help. What to wash my walls with?
    1. Yes, wash the walls first. Use TSP. (home depot or lowes carries it). This will remove all the junk which would stop your paint from adhering properly.

    2. The moldings are probably not worth removing the stuff from. It can be done, but if this is a rental it's just not worth it. You would have to try (if you can) to take them down, use a paint remover, and then finish them before you put them back. Instead, and this looks really good with a natural finish, paint them white (gloss white, use a high quality white, such as ultrapure white (home depot carries it)

    3. The wallpaper is easily removed. Score it take something such as an xactoknife, or a wallpaper removal tool. This has small blades, and basically what you are going to do is to cut holes in the wallpaper, but not all the way through. Then spray it with water (do one section at a time). The water will soften the glue holding the wallpaper to the walls, and then after 10-15 minutes, you should be able to pull the wall paper off the walls. There will be some residual paper left, or perhaps some glue, but this is a simple matter to remove also (use TSP, or if necessary a plastic putty knife).

Good luck, it's not all that hard, just time consuming. The wallpaper removal should take less than one day depending on the size of the room.

What's the best cleaning solution for washing latex painted walls prior to repainting?

    best cleaner is a chemical called ';tsp';

you can get this at most paint stores

it cleans the oils and dirt off the walls so the paint can stick better

i have heard some people use baking soda and water

both and all cleaner you need to rinse off the walls well before you paint

any comercial paint prep cleaner from your local paint store or hardware store will work

just ask them for a wall prep/cleaner

hope this helps chrisWhat's the best cleaning solution for washing latex painted walls prior to repainting?
In the UK painters use a solution of washing soda crystals ( sodium carbonate) applied for one hour, and then well rinsed off. What's the best cleaning solution for washing latex painted walls prior to repainting?
bleach and water...some people prefer amonina and water because it doesn't stain ....but bleach and water leaves no residue and kills any bacteria that might be on the wall
If you use TSP remember to rinse the walls afterwards. It leaves a residue that will prevent the paint from sticking.
    TSP Tri Sodium Phosphate
TSP (trisodiumphosphate) gotten at a paint store, Walmart, maybe some grocers.

This solution of this stuff (when mixed according to directions) will remove all greases and waxes(and residuals ';scent oils being one'; left by other cleaners to make the surface ready for painting once it has dried.

If the surface you are about to paint is shiny,(hi gloss paint is on the wall - lts say---you still need to sand it- but TSP it first(for if there is any grease, you would just spread it and grind it in with the sandpaper) Kinda compareable to dog poop. Either scoop it up right there or step in it and let the shoe do the spreading.....around the house into the carpets. No need to TSP after the sanding, just a light rag off of the sanding dust and you are ready to go.
you buy a really good primer dont wash walls... the primer disenfects and cleans anything and everything once applied l

would rec...''kilz''' they have a great primer paint the walls with that then apply a good paint like ''behr''...or sherwin williams..
I agree TSP is probably the best prepainting solution to wash the walls with, but when cleaning latex I would mix a weak solution strength or you may end up washing most of the paint instead of just cleaning. Mix a little and try it first I would start with 1/2 cup TSP to a gallon of water. Just a suggestion.
I use 409 (ammonia based cleaner) on flat latex walls, but in kitchens and bathrooms with gloss or semi-gloss I use TSP.
One time I tried windex window cleaner. I was astonished. It worked GREAT.

Is there an marker I can wash off a wall?

I want to write on my college dorm walls in marker. They are painted sheetrock and also painted cement blocks. Is there a type of marker or paint or any art material that would be semi-permanent (for the year) that I could just wash off at the end of the year (like with soap or alcohol etc)?

If not, any suggestions on another way to do this? Paper over the walls? Is there an marker I can wash off a wall?
You could try self-adhesive whiteboard skins. It's basically a big sticker that you can put over any surface to turn it into a whiteboard. But I don't think you can remove it, at least not very easily; it's meant to resurface old chalkboards and whiteboards.

There's also a product in the UK called Magic Whiteboard. It's a roll of writable film that sticks to your wall via static. Apparently it stays in place on most hard surfaces for several months, but you can take it off whenever you want. I'm guessing it should work on sheetrock too.Is there an marker I can wash off a wall?
Why not get marker boards and washable markers,I think if you did it right on the walls eventually it would soak into the paint and you would have to paint the walls.Or how about bristol board, get it cheap at the dollar store and the markers too.
Look at your local Wally World or similar for Crayola washable markers.

  • Paint coming off of walls when washed?

I'm repainting my room and was washing the walls down with just warm water and the 2 year old paint started to come off the walls. Will this be ok to paint right over? (its a dark color over a light color) or do I need to put a coat of primer over it?Paint coming off of walls when washed?
No you should be OK, but that's why you need to wash it down first. You will need to put 2 coats of paint on, make sure you use a good brand of paint like Benjamin Moore you will have much better results and it will look great for years to come and won't wash off like the stuff you have now. The finish is also important, if your painting a bathroom you will want to clean the walls so you may want a semi-gloss, if it's a bedroom you may only want a flat or eggshell finish, it will hide the imperfections in the wall better.Paint coming off of walls when washed?
1)wash the walls down with TSP

    2) prime with Kilz

    3)paint
Ok, paint comes off your wall for several reasons 1. if you painted on top of a previous slick surface, i.e. semigloss paint, your new paint didn't have anything to grip to. 2. your walls weren't cleaned so your paint didn't stick to the wall it stuck to dust ect... 3. you painted a latex paint on top of an oil based paint ( oil on oil, oil on water, no water on oil, unlessed primed). So, take off what you can with the soap and water, if it's not all coming off, then chances are it won't come off more, then prime with a Shelac based primer, Zinser makes one, you can find at most Lowes or Home Depot, then any kind of paint you desire. The primer will seal the old paint, keeping it from coming off, and give your new paint something to grip too. Hope this helps!
Put a coat of primer over it your were right.
When you mean paint comming off the walls do you mean it's chipping or flaking off or do you mean it just rubbing off like if you take a towel and rub on any painted wall surface with cheap paint it will end up in your towel. It's normal. Just lightly whipe the walls. If your so concerend just prime.
put a coat of primer over it first

What is the best way to clean/wash a white wall?

All my walls are white and there for stains, dirt, etc, etc show up pretty well. What is the best way to get stuff off my walls??

Thank you in advance. What is the best way to clean/wash a white wall?
The magic eraser by Mr Clean (or any generic or other brand version) works beautifully. The first time you do it, it's going to be quite a job to get them all -- it really does work like an eraser except that you wet it before you ';erase'; the stains with it. Just rub the stain back and forth with the damp eraser and it goes away :) Of course, try an inconspicuous place first to make sure it won't remove the paint.

Keep one handy and whenever you spot a stain, just wet the eraser and rub it off. Your walls will stay beautiful easily that way :DWhat is the best way to clean/wash a white wall?
I use Oxi clean and a rent a hi pressure sprayer it works like a charm. but remember to seal it with a finish protection paint when your done it wont stain as bad the next time and it will be washable
just use a bucket with some bleach or some cleaning agent like 409 with a scrubbing pad that should clean up pretty good
Mr clean has a cleaning block that takes crayola marks off

very easy just wet it rub over the spot and it's gone dirt or whatever it might be. I buy mine at wal mart, i'm sure most stores carry it.
The magic eraser really works, you could get the one from mr clean or the scrubbing bubbles.

The only downside is that you have to work hard on it, but it will come out!

    Hope it helps,

    Guasabara
A gallon of hot water and a cup of either Ammonia or Vinegar. If you start washing and the paint comes off, then you've not choice except to repaint. Cheap paint can't be washed...instead it turns chalky and washes off the walls.
Try a solution of vinegar and baking soda. It will fizz and bubble, but should work. Or try baking soda and plain water. There is also a product called 'stain kill', available at any home deport or lowes. Works great! Regards-Bob.

Tips for washing the walls without repainting?

my walls of my apartment are filthy and i want to wash them because i cannot repaint without the landlords approval (ive asked in the past, he told me not to) but i am so embarrassed everytime someone comes to my house and sees how filthy they are, any tips for washing them? (btw the really bad walls are the ones with latex flat paint, the glossy ones in the kitchen and bath are easy)

thanksTips for washing the walls without repainting?
You can't clean flat paint. That's the problem with flat paint. The reason that so many people use it is that it can be easily touched up. Unlike eggshell, semi-gloss, gloss, etc., you do not need to paint the entire wall so that you don't notice the touch-up. Flat can be easily touched-up and no one will know (including your landlord). If you know what the type/color of paint is on the wall, you should be able to just paint over the marks and no one will know. Other tactics, such as the Magic Eraser, soap/water, etc. will only leave a bigger mark.Tips for washing the walls without repainting?
a little bleach, a little dish soap, and a sponge mop.

Just mop the walls the way you'd mop a floor.

A neat trick to cover bad wall with out painting, buy some cheap flat sheets with a color or pattern you like. Then thumbtack them to the wall, but keep the sheets taunt. If you do it right it looks good. Buy flat thumbtacks that match the sheets.

Or why can't you just repaint the wall in the color they already are?
vinegar/ water mix works pretty good for me. about 50/50 mix. does real good taking cigarette smoke off walls too.
Clorox magic erasers they do a great job on everything
    OBSERVE MOAR INTERNETS!
TSP (trisodium phosphate). It's used to prep for painting, and cleans very well. You can get it at a paint or hardware store.
I recommend using a bucket with 3/4 water and 1/4 bleach , or water and dish soap mix,and giving a light wash with a broom .... let dry by its self.... for small spots use a mr clean magic eraser..
sugar soap is your best bet.
    Murphy,s oil soap

How do I go about washing 28ft walls in a factory? Is there any type of equipment that would work best?

With a toothbrush silly! How do I go about washing 28ft walls in a factory? Is there any type of equipment that would work best?
Scaffolding, a Saftey belt, and a pressure washer.

Um...To use a pressure washer on a ladder sounds more like something Wile E. Coyote would do.

Don't hold a high pressure jet of water off of a rickety ladder, even firemen don't do that, the hose is attatched to a ladder which is anchored to a 20 ton truck. How do I go about washing 28ft walls in a factory? Is there any type of equipment that would work best?
If it is a large factory, you should use a 'cherry picker' mobile work platform and a pressure washer. This is easier than ladders or scaffolding
I vote for the pressure washer and ladder. Be sure not to touch the water under pressure. I did that once and sliced my finger open.
An alternative to the pressure washer is a grit blaster, though it makes terrible noise and can be pretty messy.
all you need is a ladder and a pressure washer

both pretty cheap or available for rent at a local rental store
im thinking a ladder for sure

I bought a house that the former owner was a heavy smoker, I washed the walls, ceiling and had carpet cleaned.

The house still smells, I have left all windows open too. Is their a remedy to get rid of smell. Most of the walls are expensive paneling. I dont want to paint if possible. Any ideas would be appreciated.I bought a house that the former owner was a heavy smoker, I washed the walls, ceiling and had carpet cleaned.
Wow Fresh paint really does the trick.

The carpet should probably be replaced, there is most likely a lot of ash underneath it.

My new place was the same way. I had to change the carpet, Primer the entire floor with Kilz Primer to kill the smell on the wood under the carpet. Then I painted over the popcorn ceiling they had ( it was stained yellow-brown) and that still was not enough.

Once the new carpet was laid the smell was pretty much gone. I had to wash and replace the window screens cuz they were nasty.

What are you washing your walls with? Is it strong enough; Scented? you should probably paint them I hate to say it.

Good luck, Once you get most of it, your scents from living in the house will overtake the smoke smell such as: Cooking maybe some garlic or strong smelling foods, washing dishes with scented soaps, burning scented candles and stuff like that.I bought a house that the former owner was a heavy smoker, I washed the walls, ceiling and had carpet cleaned.
Pull your expensive paneling off and throw it away. Repaint the wall and then replace the paneling.
Try using a mixture of baking soda %26amp; water to wash the walls again.
replace the carpet pad and wash the drapes and windows.
That was a good idea but It still stinks dosen't it?! I would say that you picked the house you liked and thats what matters! If it is home than just learn to love it. If not contact me to give you some more advice on how to handle it.
Don't buy things that belonged to a smoker. We still had smoke stains bleeding out of the bathroom walls after 10 years of us owning the home.
    Hmm...

I had to hire a professional cleaner and I had to do a lot of remodeling.

I use to own a tiny 2 bedroom house from the 1920s and the lady who lived there (1920's-1990s) smoked all the time. I had to end up remodeling the home, inside and out.
try buying a few sceneted candles or eazy breeze use it for a week and the house will soon smell as good as new
light a bunch of safety matches in closed room. air out after couple of hours. arrange shallow bowls of vinegar arround the house. vry effective.

Nothing will clean flat paint. The only thing you can do is repaint with a satin or eggshell sheenWhat Can I Use To Wash My Walls.......?
Hi if it is interior walls try sugar-soap.(in UK)

start from the bottom and work up that way when the dirty water at the top runs down the wall it runs over the wet clean surface then rinse the lot should stop it streaking
Are we talking the outside walls? If so, go to the hardware store/home center and get some TSP (TriSodiumPhosphate) concentrate and mix that up. It will still take some scrubbing.
    TSP

Clean walls with borax or is liquid dish wash and water enough?

TSP is good. Cleans well and leaves very little residue even if you do not rinse. Also any residue will not hold dirt like some detergents. I do not recommend the Cascade though. The Chlorine can discolor some paints and wallpaper. Dish soap is ok but you should use a plain water rinse. Something like simple green also works well.

Borax by itself is not a great cleaner. Used in hard water it makes detergents more effective.Clean walls with borax or is liquid dish wash and water enough?
Use trisodium phosfate (TSP) or Cascade dishwasher soap. Wear gloves.

Our house smells stale. I have steamed the carpets, washed walls, what can I do to make it smell fresher?

I had the same problem. It might be moist air. I bought these things that you hang up (they are for closets) and they trap the moisture inside. I have to tell you my room was much fresher afterwards. You can get them in the drug store, sorry I can't remember what it was called.

Oh! There is one on the market called Damp Rid.Our house smells stale. I have steamed the carpets, washed walls, what can I do to make it smell fresher?
a lot of the time you just need to give it a good airing. if the weather is ok open the windows front and back and let the wind blow throughOur house smells stale. I have steamed the carpets, washed walls, what can I do to make it smell fresher?
Take down your curtains, wash them, line dry them, and open up your windows, and leave them for a day or so...also take some bowls filled with baking soda, and sit them around the house.
Steam clean the carpets again adding some white vinegar to the solution. Make sure you don't have any water leaks anywhere including inside walls that can be causing mold. I recently pulled up the flooring in the bathroom to find that there was moisture under the tile. Re-caulked the shower now all is well. Also, steam clean the furniture with the vinegar solution if fabric tolerates. Febreeze the mattresses and furniture you cannot clean.
Leave the windows open for a few days, get some fresh air. It's spring.
open the windows and put fans in front for a day spray lemon scent or some other scent in front of the fan.

Apply to the wall with a sponge, and rinse with clear water. If your walls have a rough texture, use old nylon stockings or socks rather than a sponge because they won't tear and leave difficult-to-remove bits on the surface.Does anyone use a particular sponge or rag when cleaning walls? Is it possible to wash a wall that has been painted with a water based paint without damaging it?

My walls are really dirty because I babysit a lot. lol there are hand prints, crayon pictures, and lots of really dirty spots. Is there a way that I can wash it? If so please explain the process. Is it possible to wash a wall that has been painted with a water based paint without damaging it?
You can wash your walls. What it looks like afterward depends on the quality of the paint that was used. Don't use an oil product, like Murphy's. It will need to be rinsed thoroughly or it will leave residue behind. Use hot water and a cleaner like Mr. Clean or $pic and $pan. Start at the bottom of the wall and work your way up. That sounds backwards, but if you start at the top, the detergent dripping through the dirty wall will leave streaks that won't come off. Hope this helps. Is it possible to wash a wall that has been painted with a water based paint without damaging it?
If you have crayon on your walls, you will need to purchase a product like ';goof-off'; or ';goo-gone'; to get rid of the crayon. You will never be able to paint over crayon. (trust me, I learned that the hard way). If you want to start with removing the grime that kids tend to leave on walls, use ';Murphy's oil soap';. It is a great cleaner that is very gentle on painted surfaces. You can buy each of the products that I have mentioned at Walmart.
You can't wash water based paint with water - it just dilutes it so you'll have pale patches where the paint has kind of washed off. I swear by microfibre cloths, which pick up dirt at an amazing rate and don't need any chemicals. You could try one either dry, or barely damp. But I still think the rubbing would take off the paint. The thing you're supposed to do, though I've not tried it, is rub with stale bread! Why not wash off all the prints, spots and pictures and repaint those areas?
Yes, water based paint is only ';water soluble'; while it is wet. Once it has dried, it can withstand cleaning with mild soap and a wet sponge.
